Electronic Medical Record
Providence invested in the implementation of a state-of-the-art electronic medical record called EPIC. Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance was updated to this medical record in 2014. All providers and nursing staff in the department utilize EPIC for essentially all order entry, verification and patient documentation. The emergency department’s implementation went quite well due to the efforts of Dr. Jorge Vournas and Dr. Robert Chavez. Dr. Vournas was the hospital-wide EPIC Champion while Dr. Chavez served as the ED EPIC Champion. Together they designed the preference lists for all emergency department providers making it possible to send of multiple orders simultaneously for a multitude of clinical situations. This has also standardized physician practice in a multitude of core measure situations such as Code Stroke, chest pain, neonatal sepsis and septic shock. With this new technology the patient now has the ability to follow their medical record electronically from their physician’s office, home computer or smart device. This system upgrade has made it possible to better serve our community and gather essential medical data which can lead to better system care which is critical as the medical system as a whole moves toward value-based care models.
